Merciless Virgin Delirious Imbibers Drink Of the Week

The Delirious Imbibers cocktail of the week is the Merciless Virgin.  I picked the this tiki, as it is a legendary cocktail and has been copied to no end.  I have had all sorts of knockoffs, copies, and tributes.  While many are excellent, the original is worth a nod.  Not only is this a great cocktail, it’s a great name.  So many of the copies are a play on this theme.  I have had a Vicious Vixen, a Daring Dame, Merciless Maiden, Daring Damsel and other wonderful riffs on this cocktail.

To Shrub or not to Shrub?

There are two versions we will try, just for fun.  First a curacao version, and the second Merciless Virgin is a shrub version.  If you are not familiar shrub is essentially a simple syrup made with vinegar and infused with fruits and herbs.  You can get shrub at a specialty market, or locally made at some farmers markets.  Which is where I get mine.  Also, Amazon has a nice selection, there is a link below.

Other than the variations it’s a typical tiki, citrus, falernum, rum and fruit flavors.  Lots of flavors. So let’s get merciless.

Here Are the Basic Cocktail Deets

Merciless Virgin Tasting Notes and Feedback

This was my pick. and we all really liked it.  Its a tart affair, dilution helps with the addition of the water, which is not common in many cocktails.  the Cherry Heering which can be an overpowering ingredient really fits in nicely.  Oh, and note in the pic to the left I accedentially put a lime in there, use a lemon please.  Personally, I preferred the shrub version over the curacao but both are delicious. The shrub I have is strawberry mint, but I bet any fruit or berry based shrub would work great, like orange or cherry.

“Shrub version is tart and wonderful.  I used strawberry mint shrub in place of the curacao. I used lots of crushed ice, 3 big blocks really helped the dilution.  The second one I made with curacao, no shrub.  She is not merciless at all, little sweeter, but a very nice cocktail.”

“Very Nice! Tart. Ingredients balance well.  I like it a lot, all strong ingredients. Diluting it definitely helped.”
