Whiskey Sour Cocktail | Balanced Perfection |

Whiskey Sour

A freshly made  Whiskey Sour may not be exactly as you remember it.  Using simple and fresh ingredients will make a perfectly balanced cocktail.  Many whiskey sours are made with some thing called “sours mix” which is commercially available, full of preservatives and costs less then $10 for a liter.  It really can’t be complicated at that price.  So what is Sours Mix? it is essentially any lemon or lime juice, and simple syrup.  Seriously that is it.  In this time of cocktail renaissance many better bars are scrapping the preservative laden commercial sours mix and going fresh. This is how they can charge up to $20 for a drink as simple as a whiskey sour.

What is a whiskey sour?  It is nothing more than a 2 ounces of whiskey (pick your favorite) and 3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice, 3/4 ounce simple syrup.  I prefer lemon with whiskey over lime, it is a better paring.  the flavor of the drink will come from the whiskey you choose.  The lemon will bring it out gently, its remarkable how different these can be based on the whiskey alone.  If you prefer  the flavor of a particular whiskey you will like this cocktail.  Guaranteed.

Perfect Whiskey Sour

My perfect version is with Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon.  It is a slightly sweeter bourbon, and makes an absolutely perfectly balanced whiskey sour.   For a stronger flavor try Jeffersons Reserve Very Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon.  A rye based sour will be dryer and more grain forward, using a bonded high proof rye makes a whole new drink, try Rittenhouse 100 proof Straight Rye Whisky.  But why stay in Kentucky?  Jameson Irish Whiskey, or Crown Royal Canadian Whisky are nice, perhaps a Japanese Whiskey.  Looking for something smokey like a single malt, jump in with a Genmorangie.  Or opt for a blended like Famous Grouse.  You get the point, pick your whiskey and enjoy the simple elegance of a whiskey sour.
