Viking Fog Cutter

Vikings and tropical drinks, who knew, Viking Fog Cutter is the answer.   Seriously, this may seem way off the deep end for a tropical drink but believe me, its great.  Just really unexpected.  I picked the base of this up from Sippin’ Safari from legendary tiki master Jeff “Beach bum” Barry.  I love a fog cutter cocktail so why not the Viking version?

What is a Viking Fog Cutter?

A fog cutter, non Scandinavian variety, is a legendary tiki that uses gin not rum.  That drink is white, and has a sherry float, all in all its a stunning cocktail.  Although, when I order them out they are always in tiki mugs so honestly they could be any color. But I have made enough, trust me it’s white.  The Viking version uses all sorts of bases, even rum. But the basic cocktail stays the same.  The four bases are Silver Rum, Gin, Brandy and Aquavit.  Aquavit is a clear Scandinavian spirit, that honestly I cant remember how I even acquired. Truthfully, I had to hunt through my back bottles to even find it, like an archeologist.  Totally understand if you don’t have this laying around.  When you do get some, it doesn’t expire, its strong stuff, so you are good for a like a decade I bet.

The white comes from Orgeat, a floral syrup, you can buy or make, I have a recipe here, but I will post a link to Amazon below for a go to, Liber & Co.  I like to serve this in a Stockholm pilsner glass, to show the color, in a strong tall glass and I like a big garnish to make the drink look austere and Nordic.

Viking Fog Cutter may seem way off the deep end for a tropical drink but believe me, its great.  Just really unexpected.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz Silver Rum (I like Real McCoy 3 Year Old Rum from Barbados)
  • 1/2 oz London Dry Gin (Beefeater is great)
  • 1/2 oz Brandy
  • 1/2 oz Aquavit (Aalborg Taffel Akavit, I've had it for years)
  • 1 1/2 oz Lemon Juice
  • 1 oz Orange Juice
  • 1/2 oz Orgeat

Instructions

1

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with crushed ice.

2

Shake well.

3

Pour all ingredients into Stockholm pilsner glass. '

4

Fill remaining volume with more crushed ice.

5

Garnish with a lemon, orange, and lime wedge, on a skewer. Make sure the orange is in the center and sticks up higher than the other two, then laid atop the glass like the prow of a Viking ship.

6

Serve with straw.
